About Me

Crystal Genes, currently a resident in Charlotte’s Plaza-Midwood, grew up in Burgaw, North Carolina and graduated from Appalachian State University in 2004 with a minor in Technical Photography. She

has studied photography at the University of Sunderland, England and has taken numerous workshops at Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. Crystal also founded the Appalachian State University Women’s Center‘s Annual Juried Women’s Art Show.
Crystal won Bride’s Choice Award in 2010 from WeddingWire.com and People’s Choice of the Week Award in the 2009 for Flare Competition. She was a finalist in 2003 and 2004 for Photography Forum Magazine’s College Photography Contest and was published twice in their Best of College Photography Annual. Crystal has worked as a photographer for Appalachian’s yearbook, The Rhododendron, and as a staff photographer for The Pender Chronicle in Burgaw. Crystal’s work has been exhibited at the Hayes MacMillan Art Gallery and ArtSpace in Boone, North Carolina, at Looking Glass Gallery at Appalachian State University, at Wilkes Art Gallery in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, at Courthouse Café and Coffee in Burgaw, and at Milan’s Café in Charlotte.

Crystal’s Assistant, Ben Aultowski, is also a resident of Charlotte’s Plaza-Midwood. Originally from Newport, NC, Ben met Crystal during his time at Appalachian State University where he studied Art and Graphic Design. They have been inseparable for nearly 8 years and together make the perfect team!
